Editing process

Happy New Year everyone! Hope you all had a great Chirstams and New Year. Apart from eating a little bit too much over the holidays I have also been spending all of my free time editing my documentary.

Even with only 2 interviews I had to cut so much in order to finally make it exactly 7 minutes long.

I started by editing individual clips from both my interviews and once I had them all ready I positioned them all on the track so I could see what the best structure would be. With some maths I managed to make all clips exactly as long as I needed them to be in order to leave some space for the presenter’s words. I then wrote the presenter script accordingly to the empty spaces and timed myself many times before recording the final version of the script.

Once I had all of the voices on the track, I decided to divide the whole piece in 2 parts, which would flow smoothly from one to another. I started my documentary with sound bites from both Lesley and Amy, using some of their strongest words in order to introduce them at the very beginning and grab the listener straight away. Then I moved on to the presenter copy, where I included some statistics and introduced the topic.

This was followed by Lesley’s story, presented bit by bit, which I decided to end on a very interesting story she told me about her friend, which is really similar to Amy’s story, so I thought it would be a very good transition.

I presented Amy’s story again bit by bit and I think the way I structured it makes it really engaging. I thought the last clip of her was so strong that I decided to finish the documentary with her.

I’m extremely satisfied with the final result as I think I managed to present their stories in a non-linear way and that’s exactly what I was aiming for.

I think he music throughout the piece really contributed to the tone of the documentary and the emotion the stories pass on so I’m really happy with using this track by Nicolai Heidlas Music.
